Join us this Sunday at 16:30hrs at the Carmelite Church in Mdina for the BACH ROAD JOURNEY, a recital of works for solo violin tracing the composers who greatly influenced JS Bach before he wrote the famous Sonatas and Partitas for unaccompanied violin, and the composers that wrote unaccompanied works for violin who were in their turn influenced by Bach’s work.
Meet Biber and his incredibly monumental Passacaglia from the Mystery Sonatas, one of the earliest known pieces for solo violin. Add a bit of Westhoff’s unaccompanied sonatas, which greatly influenced Bach since he worked alongside Westhoff at Weimar, and the older composer’s pieces share some stylistic similarities with Bach’s.
Then comes Bach’s 3rd Partita in E major, with the eternally favourite Prelude .and obviously the rets of the movements. Pisendel’s violin sonata is not so well known, but a real gem. He met Bach in Weimar and was later also introduced to none other than Telemann, who is the next composer to feature in this concert.
They’re lovely works and show the unique masters at work on works for solo violin. Performing these works is violinist Sarah Spiteri. And it’s all for a good cause. The entrance is FREE, with a retiring collection for the restoration of the 17th century organ.
