With the scorching Summer already knocking at the door, the male choir Cappella Sanctae Catharinae steps up to greet it with a light and fresh offering ‘Amore Sacro, Amore Profano’, a concert of sacred and secular music from the 16th and 17th centuries.

The repertoire chosen for this concert will pit the religious sobriety of the likes of Palestrina against the intricacy and flamboyant nature of early secular music, spearheaded by the Venetian madrigalists Giovanni Croce and Claudio Monteverdi. Despite being on opposite sides of the thematic spectrum, sacred and secular music have a lot in common, and the choir will be also be exposing these similarities through a carefully selected choice of music.

SacroProfanoThe choir, known for its intelligent use of location space to enhance the musical delivery, will be delivering this concert in two different venues. In keeping with its nature, the sacred music will be sung in the Carmelite Church of the Annunciation, Mdina. The second half of the concert featuring secular music will be a more informal affair held in the cloister behind the usually closed doors of the Carmelite Priory. This open air space will act as a perfect backdrop to the 17th century canzonette chosen for the evening.

Despite building a solid reputation as Malta’s only male chamber choir, this concert will see the choir collaborating with four sopranos on a number of pieces, in what promises to be one of the choir’s more interesting outings to date.

Supporting this concert is the restaurant at the priory, Theos: Mediterranean cuisines, who will be offering a special menu on the evening aimed at the concert goers; early booking is advisable. Admission to the concert is free, with a retiring collection towards the restoration of the 17th century organ at the priory. For every donation of 10 euros, patrons will receive a free restaurant voucher for the same amount, for lunch, redeemable at Theos: Mediterranean cuisines.
